IMPLANTS UNDERSTOOD ON MODELS
If our gums and bone were transparent, this is how our teeth would look…..the roots embedded in the jaw bone and the tooth visible in the mouth.
An implant is an artificial titanium root that is placed in the jaw bone where teeth are missing. Subsequently, the stump and artificial crown are placed. This creates an independent stand alone tooth…. replicating the natural tooth. The advantage here is that we don’t have to grind down adjacent natural teeth as in a bridge.
In cases of loose fitting dentures, implants are placed in the jaw bone followed by ball attachments.
The dentures have nylon caps which click onto the ball attachments ,when seated. This makes it semi fixed , improving the fit of the denture drastically.
